“Being at Glen Mills was a blessing,” former GMS student and Super Bowl champion Bernard Pierce recently told an assembled group of students.
A third round draft pick out of Temple University in the 2012 NFL draft, Pierce was a key member of the Baltimore Ravens’ backfield when they won Super Bowl XLVII in 2013.
“When you set your mind to it, there’s nothing you can’t do and that’s what a lot of Glen Mills teachers and coaches brought out of me,” Pierce said.
One of those who brought that out was head Glen Mills football coach Kevin Owens.
“He was more like a father figure to me than a football coach,” Pierce said about his former coach.
Owens has great respect for Pierce, and not just because he’s made it to the National Football League.
“Bernard’s made a lot of good decisions and made a lot of sacrifices to get where he is,” Owens told the audience.
Pierce, who will be in the Denver Broncos’ training camp, offered some great advice to current Glen Mills students and appreciates his time at the school.
“You need to take care of your grades,” Pierce told the students. “I appreciate all of the extra time that the teachers put into me to make sure my grades were where they had to be.”
Pierce, who has always considered himself to be an underdog, was also presented a banner to unveil that will hang from the rafters at the school’s Harrision Gymnasium.
