The Battling Bulletin is published on a regular basis throughout the year by a joint effort among the students and staff members in our Journalism, Photo, and Print shops.
The 28 page tabloid provides a forum for Journalism students to improve their writing and reporting skills by covering events at the school. Ceremonies, sporting events, news and feature stories, and other items are covered in the paper. Student written poems are also printed in every issue and may students of the month are recognized.
After an article is assigned, an event covered, and the story written, the articles is edited and proofread by the Journalism Shop instructor and the Vocational Team Leader.
An accompanying picture, or pictures, may also appear in the final layout and assigned, taken, developed, and printed by the staff and students in the Photo Lab.
With the articles and pictures in hand, the Print Shop students and staff members then work together to design the layout of each page.
After each page is laid out, it is then resubmitted to the Journalism Shop and Vocational Team Leader for final proofreading.

Glen Mills students had an exciting opportunity on July 14th through the 16th to participate in the 22nd annual Geography Bowl. This learning-filled contest, hosted by Career and Technical Education staff member Graham Desmond, is similar to the T.V. game show "Jeopardy." Students were challenged in Civil War, Land and Water, World War II, Sports Geography, Map and Globe Skills, and U.S. Geography categories.
After a long competition, Raheem Robinson (Eastern Division, Intermediate), Christopher Gibson (Western Division, College Prep), Tyler Arias (Southern Division, GED), and Shawn Richardson (Northern Division, Learning Center) won their divisions. The top four finishers in each division earned VISA gift cards.
Additionally, Arias recorded the highest ever score in the separate Map Quiz. The top three finishers in each division of the Map Quiz also won VISA gift cards.
Arias credits the event for making learning fun.
"I wasn't really interested in history and geography but now that I've studied it a while, it's become more interesting," Arias said. "I enjoyed it and it was a lot of fun."
Arias, and the other competitors, had help as they competed in the Geography Bowl.
"My coach Mike Dumas was very helpful and my peer Christopher Gibson helped me study," Arias said.
James Elnicki (Western Division, College Prep), DeNorris Mahone (Northern Division, Learning Center), and Eric Broadhead (Eastern Division, Intermediate) also won their categories.
The Geography Bowl, coordinated by Mike Smitheman, is a good experience for both Glen Mills students and Glen Mills staff members.
"Everybody involved in this process is a winner," Dr. Randy Ireson said as the finalists and their coaches joined him on stage. "One of the things I want to point out is that many of the students, when they came up on the stage and thanked their coaches and their staff, they also thanked someone who was helping them study, and that was a peer. I think that's outstanding because together, we can all make each other better. We've had 22 years of the Geography Bowl, 22 years of taking learning and knowledge and making it fun and turning it into a competition. And at the end of the day, everyone who sat in this audience learned something."
After a lot of studying and an exciting competition, here are the results: Congratulations to everyone.

For their outstanding accomplishments, Glen Mills students and faculty members were recognized at the Educational Awards Ceremony in the Hayes Hall Recreation Center on June 19 in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd, which included Executive Director Garry Ipock, members of the Board of Managers, faculty members, and proud families.
"We are here tonight for a special reason, to celebrate our students' achievements," Dr. Ireson said at the beginning of the evening.
Curtis Johnson, the President of the Glen Mills Board of Managers, welcomed the student body, faculty, and special guests to the ceremony and congratulated the award recipients for their accomplishments.
Johnson Hall student Maurice Harrison earned Valedictorian honors for the Glen Mills Class of 2008 and is looking forward to attending Lincoln University, where he plans to major in pre-med. Harrison's list of accomplishments at Glen Mills is impressive. The College Prep student has earned a GED and a Glen Mills diploma while learning skills in the Photo Lab. He is a member of the Battling Bulls Club and was a part of the indoor and outdoor track teams.
"Throughout his stay at Glen Mills, he has continually challenged himself in the classroom and as a role model for his peers," Dr. Ireson noted.
Harrison enjoyed being encouraged to do his very best in the classroom.
"My academic experiences here at Glen Mills have helped motivate me to accomplish more than I thought I could," Harrison explained. "Instead of just being satisfactory, I was pushed to do more."
Harrison congratulated his fellow classmates and wished them well.
The audience also had a chance to hear several former Glen Mills students who are finding success and serving as role models for our current students.
Young men from 29 different educational and career and technical areas were recognized and Video Productions students, under the guidance of instructor Mike Delbuono, presented a video recognizing some of the highlights from the past academic year.
Faculty members recognized students in the Learning Center, Intermediate, GED, and Career and Technical Education areas for their achievements. Additionally, students who earned Glen Mill diplomas were also cited.
Dr. Glenn Featherman helped present the various Teacher of the Year awards to David Burrell, Paul Dixon, Ato Troop, Lyall Bryan, Gene Giallombardo, and Jamie Gill. Many students were also recognized for earning special awards in their areas of study and many received various scholarships as well. Dr. Ireson also introduced nearly four-dozen members of the Class of 2008 who are planning to attend college next fall and recognized those who helped make that happen.
"I would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to all of the individuals, families, and organization whose contributions made these scholarships a reality, and thank them for their generosity and commitment to our students' continuing education," Dr. Ireson said.
Dr. Ireson closed the ceremony by talking about the students one final time.
"Tonight you have witnessed the achievements of one of our greatest resources, our student body," Ireson told the audience. "Seated here are young men who will become leaders in the community, heads of households, and contributing members of society."
