The Battling Bulletin is published on a regular basis throughout the year by a joint effort among the students and staff members in our Journalism, Photo, and Print shops.
The 28 page tabloid provides a forum for Journalism students to improve their writing and reporting skills by covering events at the school. Ceremonies, sporting events, news and feature stories, and other items are covered in the paper. Student written poems are also printed in every issue and many students of the month are recognized.
After an article is assigned, an event covered, and the story written, the articles is edited and proofread by the Journalism Shop instructor and the Vocational Team Leader.
An accompanying picture, or pictures, may also appear in the final layout and assigned, taken, developed, and printed by the staff and students in the Photo Lab.
With the articles and pictures in hand, the Print Shop students and staff members then work together to design the layout of each page.
After each page is laid out, it is then resubmitted to the Journalism Shop and Vocational Team Leader for final proofreading.

A film crew from the Golf Channel recently spent the better part of two days at Glen Mills filming for a segment to be aired on their show “Golf in America,” hosted by Anthony Anderson. The finished piece is scheduled to first air on July 13 at 9:00 p.m.
Crews were on hand on June 24 th to get footage of the course and to interview former Glen Mills student Sean Kearney, who recently graduated from Penn State with a degree in Golf Course Turfgrass Management. The crew also taped a speech Kearney gave at our Educational Awards Ceremony that evening.
The crew, along with veteran CBS News correspondent and Golf Channel contributor Jim Axelrod, returned on Saturday to get more footage and to interview Ron Pilot, the Glen Mills board member who spearheaded the building of a golf course. Axelrod also interviewed Bob Pfister, the Senior Golf Course Management instructor at the Golf Course at Glen Mills.
Axelrod feels the story about Kearney and the Golf Course at Glen Mills would certainly interest the show’s audience.
“The show is about how golf touches peoples’ lives,” the well-respected veteran journalist, said. “And about how golf can impact peoples’ lives. This (the Golf Course at Glen Mills) really is golf in America.”
The following Monday, the crew traveled to Fisher’s Island in New York, where Kearney is doing a post graduate internship, to get more footage for the story.
Matt Howley from The Workshop, a full service multimedia production company based in Bryn Mawr that produces “Golf In America” for the Golf Channel, was impressed with the operation of the Golf Course at Glen Mills.
“It really is top notch,” Howely said. “You can tell that there are high expectations here and the school and the students take a lot of pride in the Golf Course at Glen Mills.”

After achieving numerous accomplishments, Glen Mills students and faculty members were honored and recognized for their hard work in 29 different areas at the Educational Awards Ceremony at the Hayes Hall Recreation Center on June 24th in front of an enormous audience, which included proud family members, Executive Director Garry Ipock, members of the Board of Managers, faculty members, and many more. “Education- the Blueprint to Life” was the theme of the ceremony.
The President of the Glen Mills Board of Managers, Curtis Johnson, welcomed the student body and the guests before congratulating the award recipients for their accomplishments. Dr. Randy Ireson, the Director of Education at the Glen Mills Schools, hosted the event.
“You have the power to produce your own success and it’s all about choices,” Johnson told the students.
John Helem, a College Prep student, represented the Class of 2010 as the Valedictorian and is planning to continue his education at Prairie View A&M University in Texas.
“It is my privilege to represent the Class of 2010,” Helem, who thanked his many family members and friends in attendance, said.
Students who received their Glen Mills diploma and/or a GED were recognized while young men were also cited for their accomplishments in the Learning Center and Intermediate level classes. Others were recognized for their outstanding work in their Career and Technical Education areas and Timothy Mead earned that department’s Student of the Year Award.
Meanwhile, several dozen students were recognized for earning a Glen Mills Scholarship and/or a variety of other scholarships to help them pay for further education.
Of course, students would not have been able to achieve what they did without the help of talented and dedicated faculty members and six were honored in various Teacher of the Year categories.
The audience also enjoyed a video, produced by the Video Productions Shop, that depicted some of the accomplishments and highlights from the Class of 2010 and talked about even more opportunities that will be presented to the student body.
Another highlight of the evening was hearing from two alumni speakers- Sean Kearney and Ryan Mickelson. Kearney is a recent turfgrass science graduate from Penn State University and is now doing a graduate internship at prestigious Fishers Island in New York while Mickelson just graduated from Temple University’s Doctor of Pharmacy program.
“I felt a responsibility to share my experiences,” Mickelson said. “Before coming to Glen Mills, I had become accustomed to failure…but Glen Mills is unique. This school certainly gives students an opportunity of a lifetime.”
“If it wasn’t for Glen Mills, I would not be where I am today,” Kearney said.
Kearney will also be featured on a segment on “Golf in America,” a show on the Golf Channel, sometime in July.
